鍺因其高折射率、較大的穿透距離範圍和堅固的機械性能而廣泛應用。鍺的穿透範圍為 2 - 16 μm,且在可見光譜區是不透明的,因此十分適用於紅外雷射應用。但是,鍺會發生熱逸散現象,即隨著溫度的升高,穿透率會降低;事實上,鍺在 100°C 的溫度下幾乎是不透明的,在 200°C 的溫度下則完全沒有穿透性。當設計用於重量敏感系統的設備時,應考慮到鍺的高密度 (5.33 g/cm3) 特性。鍺的努氏硬度 (780) 約為氟化鎂的兩倍,這一特性使其成為有堅固光學元件要求的紅外線應用的理想之選。鍺不會與空氣、水、鹼金屬和酸(硝酸除外)發生反應。
