SWIR 是 Short Wavelength Infrared(短波紅外)的縮寫。SWIR 通常指900nm~2500nm的光波長範圍。

由於標準矽傳感器的成像上限約為1000nm,SWIR成像需要能夠在超出矽上限的短波紅外範圍內操作的傳感器和攝像機組件。砷化鎵銦(InGaAs)傳感器通常用於SWIR成像,一般覆蓋900nm~1700nm範圍。但InGaAs設備比較昂貴,且在縮小畫素間距和提高解析度陣列方面仍有不足。

不同於長波紅外(LWIR)光是由物體本身發射,SWIR或短波紅外光與可見光類似,其光子被物體反射或吸收,提供了高解析度成像所需的強對比度。LWIR成像儀提供的是較為模糊的熱像,而SWIR成像儀則能夠像可見光相機一樣提供高解析度影像。

SWIR成像儀還應用於許多領域,包括矽檢查、雷射光束輪廓分析、高光譜成像、化學和塑膠感測、機器視覺成像、農業感測、監控系統以及醫學成像等。亦可用於手機面部識別傳感器,以及模糊環境中的自動駕駛車輛成像。
